About ☆ Facilities

◆We do construction all year round.

They are doing construction all year round, reminding me of the Sagrada Familia or Yokohama Station.
There is speculation that public works projects are being forced on us by national policy.

The construction work that is done is rarely done for the benefit of students or faculty.
In one case, the flooring in a break room was changed to wood grain flooring without warning in order to promote the dignitaries who came from abroad.
(I wish they would have put in a heater instead of doing that, because it was cold and there was no heater...)

◆The practice room is in disrepair.

For music students, whether or not they can practice well in the school's practice room is an important issue for their future career choice.

When I was a student at the school, the practice room was as dilapidated as a slum.
Pianos were often out of tune.

In addition, the soundproofing of the practice rooms was almost nonexistent, except for a few newer practice rooms.
Furthermore, the practice rooms were littered with trash.
The walls were covered with graffiti many.
It was as if the students had half given up, thinking that they shouldn't complain because the tuition fees are lower than those of private music schools. (I know it's their own fault, but...)

The situation has greatly improved now, but it used to be much wilder.
Many of us slept for long hours in the practice room or brought in TVs to play video games.

When I was a student, Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64 was very popular, and there was even an unofficial circle.
There were constant instances of students using the practice room as their private room.
For many years, there was a sterile battle between the teaching staff, who removed students' personal belongings (TVs, comic books, etc.), and the students, who relocated them without punishment.

◆Cafeteria

In the past, the Faculty of Fine Arts had a cafeteria called "Oura Cafeteria" and the Faculty of Music had a cafeteria called "Castle".
Both cafeterias are now out of business, but they used to be places of rest and relaxation available to all, including tourists to Ueno Park.

Hence, the cafeterias were occupied by elderly tourists, and many students were unable to have lunch at the cafeterias.
This was a problem unique to a university located in a tourist area, but the problem seems to have been solved by Corona by refraining from going out.

About ☆Students

◆The students' eyes are dead.
Many of our students are fully committed to the task at hand.
Therefore, it is no exaggeration to say that they are always worried.
Many students walk through the school gates with eyes like dead fish.

◆Many students come from families that are not rich.

The tuition at Geidai is about the same as that of a private liberal arts university.
Therefore, even ordinary people can attend.
In particular, families whose parents are musicians do not have much money, so there are many second and third generation musicians who only apply to the University of the Arts due to financial reasons.

◆Conclusion
What do you think?
You can't expect a glamorous campus life like other music colleges, though,
As a training facility for artists in the downtown area next to the Ueno Zoo,
It will continue to be a valuable place where even families with little money can study music.
