Visiting the last unexplored region (Music Department classes)

Feb 23, 2022

Tokyo University of the Arts (Ueno Zoological Institute) has been increasingly featured in the media and in books in recent years.

This was triggered by the huge hit of a nonfiction novel titled "Tokyo University of the Arts, the last unexplored region: The Chaotic Daily Life of Geniuses".

The author's wife attended Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, which led to the discovery of the university's mysterious nature.

In other words, it is a book about the students of the University of the Arts from a third party's point of view.

This time, the author (of this blog), who was actually a student in the music department of the University of the Arts,
I would like to discuss some of the things I saw at the university.

(I am a music student, so I do not know much about the art department. I don't know much about the art department...)

About the class

◆No extra charge no matter how many classes you take.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of classes (such as those required for a teaching license) that require an additional fee at private music universities.
One music college charges more than 100,000 yen for classes to obtain a teaching license.

However, Geidai does not charge any additional fees.
After enrollment, students can take many classes without hesitation.

◆Many classes are small.

Since there are more subsidies from the state than other music schools, the number of teachers per student is more.
Therefore, our faculty members are also very attentive to classes other than major practical skills.

Especially in the case of the Music Department, chamber music and score reading are more generous than at other schools.

If you are lucky, you may have less than 5 students per professor per hour.
Sometimes less than 5 students take the course. (despite the fact that it's not just a major practical)

◆The master-student relationship is thin.

I believe that aspiring professional teachers and students often have a strong bond as a master and pupil under their pupil.
However, most of the classes in the practical arts at art universities are characterized as teaching activities as a public servant.

Unlike private universities, you will not be fired for lack of motivation.
I think the Faculty of Fine Arts at a public university is roughly like this.

Next time, I will give my personal opinion about the facilities and the students attending.
Please look forward to it~~(^^)/
