Why are more young men learning to play the violin?

Jan 7, 2022

When the author was a child, violin was a girl's lesson.

As a male elementary school student, I carried a violin on my back and attended music classes in town with some guilty conscience.

Twenty-five years have passed since then, and I have become a violin instructor.

Nowadays, men and women of all ages come to learn the violin in roughly equal proportions.
In particular, I have noticed a great increase in the number of young men in their 20s coming to learn the violin.

Why has the number of young men learning violin increased?

As the author, I would like to offer two hypotheses.

The first is the influence of Taro Hakase.

Mr. Hakase's breakthrough is thought to have reduced the number of people who feel uncomfortable with the idea of a male playing the violin as a musical instrument.

His famous songs such as "Jounetsu Tairiku" and "Himawari" have increased the number of admirers of men who play the violin, both men and women.

Second, the growing number of young string players in singing shows has raised the likability of the string instrument itself.

Since the 2000s, stringed instruments, including the violin, have been used extensively in the backing bands of idols.

Having an extravagant backing band with plenty of strings has come to be seen as a sign of success for solo artists and bands.

Unlike enka backing bands, the musicians in these backing bands tend to be young, looks-oriented performers, both male and female.
As a result, the world's view of string players became more idol-like than before.

This may have led to an increase in popularity for the stringed instrument, the violin.
