Acts of instrument abuse that we tend to do

Feb 25, 2022

Hello.
Today, I would like to summarize some typical examples of things that we tend to do but actually put a burden on our instruments.

Even if it's just a small thing, if you keep doing it, it will surely cause a lot of damage.
If you use your instrument with as much care as possible, it may become more comfortable with you.

◆Saxophone
When you take the instrument out of the case, you grab the bell with one hand and lift it up.
Since it's so snug in the case, you have to think a bit about where to put your hand.
The easiest place to grab is the big hole in the bell, so you tend to do it, but look carefully.
But look closely at the bell.
If a large force is applied while holding the bell, it will immediately distort.
Then the tone will be affected, and the distortion will affect other parts of the body without you knowing it...
To avoid this, don't hold the bell.

◆Flute

When carrying an assembled flute, carry it by the head tube.
For this, it is more correct to say "There is a risk of falling" rather than that it is a burden.
Since it is tightly fitted, it will not fall off so easily, but there is a possibility that the foot tube could fall off in a moment of accident.
When carrying it, it is better to grip the foot tube side and keep the head tube side on your body.

◆Trumpet, trombone, horn.

There may be situations, such as when there is no space to place it horizontally, where you may have to stand it up on a desk or the like, with the bell on its feet. This is an absolute no-no.
The same is true for saxophones, but bells play a very important role in the sound.

It is not just a thin piece of metal, but a precisely calculated thinness and shape.
If forcible force is applied to it and it becomes distorted, the original sound of the instrument cannot be produced properly. Place the instrument properly on its side.

◆Stringed instruments such as violins
After practice, do you put away the strings while they are still tight? You need to loosen them.
Violins and other stringed instruments are under a lot of tension and are stretched tight.
In this state, if a large force is applied instantly, depending on the condition of the strings, they may break in an instant.
For example, a sudden change in temperature between indoors and outdoors can cause
Even small changes in the expansion and contraction of the instrument, for example, due to sudden temperature changes between indoors and outdoors, can be enough force to break the strings.
After practice, loosen the strings a little before putting them away.
Well, there are exceptions when it is better to leave them taut.

◆Conclusion
There are many other things that we tend to do with various instruments, but it's hard to notice them if you're on your own, and you don't even know what they are.

It would be great if you could learn from a professional who knows how to handle the instruments and enjoy music with the correct knowledge.
