When purchasing a Tsugaru Shamisen
The Tsugaru shamisen is not sold in classical music stores or band music stores,
So, there are many people who do not know where to buy a Tsugaru shamisen.
In this article, we will discuss the purchase of a Tsugaru shamisen instrument for beginners.
Beginners' Models
Beginners' models are made of relatively inexpensive material called "Karin," which is mass-produced to keep costs down.
These shamisen can be had for as little as 50,000 yen and are of sufficient quality to learn basic playing techniques.
However, their tone and durability are inferior to those of high-end models.
Professional Models
Professional Tsugaru shamisen are handcrafted by artisans using carefully selected woods, one by one.
These instruments have superior depth of sound, resonance, and responsiveness when played, and it is not uncommon for the price to reach 300,000 yen or more, in some cases more than 1 million yen.
They have a very mellow sound, especially those made of high-quality materials, ebony or ebony, and traditionally handmade.
Considerations in Choosing a Shamisen
When choosing a Tsugaru shamisen, it is important to consider your playing level, intended use, and budget.
Beginners should start with an affordable model and gradually move up to higher quality models as their skills improve (or when they see the prospect of continuing to play the instrument).
Where to Buy
Entry-level models can be purchased by mail order. However, we recommend that you purchase from a supplier that offers free replacement of defective instruments.
Intermediate and higher level instruments can be purchased at (Tsugaru) shamisen studios located mainly in Aomori Prefecture, as well as at specialty Japanese instrument stores scattered in urban areas throughout Japan.
Some high-end department stores also sell Tsugaru shamisen for a limited time.
