Taking Clarinet Playing to the Next Level: How to Improve for Intermediate Players

Oct 27, 2024

I'm not a beginner anymore, but I guess I'm not an advanced player.
To all of you who face the clarinet every day with this feeling,
Here are a few ways to further your progress.
By adopting these approaches, you can improve not only your technical skills, but also your musical expression and confidence.

  1. Broaden your repertoire

At the intermediate level, it is important to broaden the range of your playing by trying out different genres and eras of music. Explore new musical worlds by tackling pieces from a variety of genres, from classical to jazz to popular music.
You will also increase your musical draw by being exposed to a variety of composers' works, from Baroque pieces arranged from other instruments to contemporary works.

  2. Improve your technique.

At the intermediate level, it is important to master basic techniques and develop more advanced skills. In addition to practicing scales and arpeggios, challenge yourself with more advanced techniques such as rhythmic complexity, speed, and changes in dynamics. It is also helpful to seek advice from an expert or instructor to help you hone a particular technique.

  3. Pursuing Musical Expression

At the intermediate level, students are expected to further develop their musical expression. It is important to understand the background and structure of a piece and to accurately express the emotion and intent of the piece.
Read the score from cover to cover to understand the overall flow and details.
Then, pursue deeper musical expression by combining various performance elements such as dynamic expression, phrasing, and rhythmic flexibility (tempo rubato).

  4. Increase performance opportunities.

At the intermediate level, it is important to create regular performance opportunities. You can further hone your playing by performing in groups such as ensembles, orchestras, and bands, as well as by increasing your opportunities for solo performances. Participating in public concerts and competitions is also an effective way to improve your performance with a goal in mind.

The intermediate stage requires continuous effort and exploration to take your playing to the next level. Incorporate these methods to take your own clarinet playing to new heights.
