How to maintain your sanshin for a long time

Apr 23, 2024

Regular Cleaning

The surface of the sanshin should be wiped regularly with a soft cloth.
Gently wiping off fingerprints and dirt from the strings, bachi, and body will protect the wood and keep it shiny.
Use a dry cloth, as moisture can damage the instrument.

Maintaining the Strings

Sanshin strings should be checked regularly and replaced as needed.
Depending on the frequency of use and storage environment, it is recommended to replace the strings with new ones if they lose tone or look worn.
The tension of the strings should also be adjusted regularly to maintain optimal tone.

Humidity and Temperature Control

The sanshin is a sensitive instrument to changes in humidity and temperature.
It is especially important to keep the humidity constant, as too much dryness can cause the wood to crack.
Use an indoor humidifier or dehumidifier as needed to keep the humidity in the range of 40% to 60%.
Avoid direct sunlight and direct exposure to the wind from air conditioners.

Storage

Even when not in use for long periods of time, it is important to store sanshin in an appropriate manner.
Store them in a special case or bag and keep them in a cool place out of direct sunlight.
Also, when storing sanshin upright, be careful not to let it fall over.

Inspection by a specialist

It is recommended that you have your sanshin inspected by a professional once a year.
In particular, replacing or adjusting the strings may require specialized skills.
Make sure your sanshin is in good condition through professional maintenance.

Daily care and regular maintenance are essential for the longevity of your sanshin.
By taking good care of your beloved instrument, you will be able to enjoy its beautiful tone for many years to come.
