The Journey of Viola Making: The Magic of Sound from the Ground Up
Apr 5, 2024
Hello everyone.
In recent years, the value of experiences has become more important than the value of goods.
This applies to musical instruments as well,
In the field of musical instruments as well, there is an emerging need for people to not only "buy" but also "experience" the making of musical instruments with their own hands.
For this reason, musical instrument studios around the world have begun to sell courses that allow visitors to experience making their own instruments.
In this article, we would like to explain the process of making a viola by a professional rather than a hands-on experience.
Let's take a look at how mere wood is transformed into an inspiring instrument by the hands of the workshop's craftsmen.
Material Selection
The first step in making a viola begins with the selection of appropriate materials.
Building an instrument from driftwood found around the corner will not produce a good sound.
Mainly, spruce (pine) is used for the surface board, and maple (maple) for the back and side panels (ribs).
These woods are selected not only for their excellent acoustic properties, but also for their ease of processing.
Wood Forming
The selected wood is then cut and shaped into the various parts of the viola.
During this process, F-shaped holes (forte-shaped holes) are drilled in the surface plate to allow the sound to resonate well,
An internal cavity is formed. This completes the basic structure that allows the viola to sound.
Assembly
The shape of the viola gradually emerges as each of the molded parts is assembled. Careful assembly with glue ensures strength and durability.
At this stage, the soul post, which can be called the soul of the viola, is installed inside.
Incidentally, the soul post is not glued to the viola.
The soul post may be replaced with a new one during the maintenance process.
Finishing
Once assembled, the viola is polished to enhance its final beauty and feel.
A protective and aesthetic varnish is then carefully applied.
The type and application of varnish is a very important process, as it affects not only the appearance but also the tone of the instrument.
String Installation and Adjustment
Finally, the strings are attached and parts such as pegs, tailpiece, and chinstrap are installed.
The maker adjusts the tension of the strings and fine-tunes the viola so that it sounds its best.
At this stage, the viola is ready to make its voice heard for the first time.
Viola making is an artistic process that requires a high level of skill and sensitivity.
Each viola is brought to life by the passion and skill of the craftsman.
With a viola in your hand,
Please spend a pleasant time with the viola in your hand.
