Great composers' lives of "miserably lazy except for music
Feb 28, 2025
The great composers of music history were incredibly focused and produced masterpieces. Their personal lives, however, were disastrous. They were careless about everything but music, including diet, money management, socializing, and hygiene, and in some cases, they left anecdotal evidence that they could only be considered social misfits. This article will present the reality of composers who were devoted to music, but were miserably lazy in everything else.
We look into the reality of the life of that great composer!
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Attitude toward music: Perfectionist, elaboratorial type. He wrote major works such as Symphony No. 9.
Laziness in daily life: He disliked taking baths, often emitting a foul odor, and keeping his clothes on for days at a time. He ate as he pleased.
Anecdote: The landlord of the apartment where he lived once complained that he did not clean the room and that he sprayed water all over the place.
2. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Attitude toward music: Meticulously finished his scores.
Daily sloth: He was completely sloppy in his money management and never stopped spending even though he had many debts. He was a drunkard and melted down his performance fees in the taverns.
Anecdote: Once, when he had a dispute with his employer over the payment of his salary, he became so angry that he went to the tavern.
3. frédéric chopin (1810-1849)
Attitude toward music: Pursued delicate musical expression and perfection in performance.
Daily laziness: He never took care of his health and ate properly. Without Georges Sand (the writer), his life would have been ruined.
Anecdotes: Often wrote letters saying "I spent all day in bed again today," and in fact spent many days bedridden.
Claude Debussy (1862-1918)
Attitude toward music: A master of impressionist music, he insisted on precise harmonies and original sound production.
Daily laziness: He had no sense of planning and zero sense of money. He spends lavishly, racks up debts, and has no intention of paying them back.
Anecdote: Frequently chased by debt collectors, he repeatedly borrowed money from friends and acquaintances and then ran away.
5. Richard Wagner (1813-1883)
Attitude toward music: A great man who revolutionized the history of music.
Laziness in daily life: Zero ability to make a living. He was constantly in debt and depended on patrons from all over the place.
Anecdote: He was a profligate spender, lived beyond his means, and would have been completely ruined without the support of King Ludwig II.
summary
The great composers produced masterpieces through their talent, but their personal lives were so miserable. They never bathed, were mired in debt, and had no social life.
When you listen to the music, you may enjoy it from a different point of view if you think of their spectacular personal lives. You will feel more human when you listen to the symphony thinking, "The composer of this symphony was on the run from debt collectors...".
